SHORTLY AFTER MIDNIGHT by Trev Teasdel 1985 Middlesbrough
Quiet in the town Hear the full band version here
Darkness creeps around
Silence is a menace
Sleep cannot be found.
Tension in the town Hear the first blistering synth version here
Your heart begins to pound
Feet begin to itch
Toss and turn around
Feel you wanna cry
Burning of the eye
Explosion of the soul
Helplessly you lie
Feel the tension rise
Fear is in your eyes
Seems you want to scream
Then the feeling dies
Chorus
Shortly after midnight, shortly after midnight
Shortly after midnight, shortly after midnight
Stranger in the cold light, standing in the moonlight
There a knocking at the door
A feeling not quite right
That robbed the purse of hope
And left you naked in the night
It crept upon you unawares
Teased and tore you like a cat
..Til you screamed out inside
..What the hell is that!..
(Chorus)
Shortly after midnight, shortly after midnight
Shortly after midnight, shortly after midnight
Stranger in the cold light, standing in the moonlight
(Bridge)
Emptiness was floodlit by the moon
As it crept through window into the room
Hand in hand with the darkness in the soul
Ushered in by the sound of a silent drum roll .. oll etc.
Quiet in the town
Not a single sound
Moon turned out its light
In the darkest deep of night
The wind it made no sound
Sleep could not be found
Darkness did surround
Midnight in the town
Chorus .. Shortly after midnight etc.
Lyric by Trev Teasdel 1986
.........................
Began as a sketch - a scenario written during a break at Cash's Textile firm in Coventry 1979. Developed into a poem for the Teesside Writers Workshop in 1985 and redeveloped as a song shortly after with Steve Gillgallon and Steve Ingledew. I wrote it on guitar with chords in the first postion but punked it a bit as we practiced using power chords. We did a few versions with the acoustic and the analogue synth.
Version one was done using keyboards, bass and
The second version was done in 1986 again on Fostex and remixed at Studio 64 in Middlesbrough for inclusion on a spoken word and music album I produced for one of my creative writing classes.
Trev Teasdel - words and music / electric guitar. Steve Gillgallon - bass guitar / Keyboards and arranger Steve Ingledew - keyboards and recording.
I love the rhythm of it, the quiet, forbidding drive behind every line. Nice one Trev.
